We will reflect on the social finance developments in Latin America over the last few years. In terms of capital growth, impact investing has definitely arrived in the region—but has it achieved its goals? On the one hand, key challenges have emerged, including a limited investment pipeline, imperfect methods for measuring impact and lack of a legal framework. On the other, despite these challenges, reason for optimism exists.

Investors have come to realise how important it is to understand their exposure to carbon stranded assets. Fueled by an increased demand for solar and wind energy, clean energy investment last year beat all expectations. In the session we will look at recent trends on low carbon investment strategies and what these suggest for future developments.

Undeniably, extractive industries pose unique challenges for sustainable development, making solutions all the more urgent, but also more difficult than in other sectors. Some of the specific challenges include the asymmetry of knowledge and skills between governments and companies, the pervasive confidentiality of the sector, the non-renewability of the resources the sector, and the historical records of human rights and environmental shortfalls, among others. We’ll take a look at strategies to answer these challenges.
