Venture Philanthropy In Practice

Singapore – Asian Venture Philanthropy Network (AVPN), a fast growing network of over 180 organisations from 28 countries that are involved in venture philanthropy and social investing in Asia, is hosting the third run of its highly anticipated annual conference in Singapore from 20 to 23, April 2015.

Responding to a broad interest and desire of knowing more about venture philanthropy and social investing in Asia, the 2014 conference set out to ask “what has worked in Asia” and witnessed a great success of 26 sessions, 88 speakers and 390 delegates from 29 countries and 244 organisations. The coming together of international organisations like Shell Foundation, BMW Foundation, Oxfam; Asian players from the SK group, Social Ventures Hong Kong, Dasra, China Foundation Center and local organisations including Lien Centre for Social Innovation and National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre has espoused an electric and supportive atmosphere for discussions and sharing.

The AVPN Conference 2015 will be bigger than its predecessors and will bring together venture philanthropy and social investing leaders and active supporters from Asia, North America and Europe, including private equity firms, foundations, wealth and asset managers, high net worth individuals, family offices, social impact investors, professional service firms, government representatives and universities. However, places are by invite only in order to ensure that we secure the right people in the room. The conference will promote shared learning, best practices and active networking across diverse sectors to build a vibrant and high impact venture philanthropy community in Asia.

This year, the AVPN Conference will deep dive into five focus areas: Pre-deal processes; Capacity building of social organisations; Impact assessment, Portfolio management and Multi-sector collaboration. The panels, workshops and breakout sessions will revolve around these five areas and bring clarity to any issues or questions from the practitioners and funders alike. The conference will also continue providing a platform to showcase more social enterprises funded by AVPN members.

Doug Miller, founding chairman of AVPN, who is also the co-founder of European Venture Philanthropy Association (EVPA), explains his excitement with the Asian market – “Although Europe and America are seen as leaders in social investing methodologies and models, Asia is catching up at lightning speed! Already, membership in AVPN is above 180 organisations after only 3 years. This is because Asia has a practice of learning from others, being early adopters and then using innovation and localization to initiate even better processes. As part of this process, it is vital that the industry gets things right by benchmarking against industry standards and best practices.”

The conference focus reflect the 5 verticals that AVPN’s new Capability Development Model will be built on, which will help practicing organisations understand their venture philanthropy journey better.
